River Oulankajoki flows in a wide valley. Upstream, the river is flanked by beautiful wild flower meadows and lush vegetation. Downstream the river basin finds its way in a valley of high sand banks. Oulanka national park area shows the unique nature of the region at its best and gives a good view into wilderness hardly touched for centuries. Canoeing route Savilampi (Visitors centre) - Kiutaköngäs - Jäkälämutka

We are transported to the starting point of the canoeing tour close to Lake Savilampi. Some 300 metres before reaching the lake the canoeists take the canoes down a chute to the lake. Right at the beginning we pass Savinalampi wilderness hut, which sleeps 6-7 people. There are some rapids to shoot where the lake Savinalampi and the river meet. The rapids are relatively shallow and not very fast flowing. At the northern shore of the lake river Savinajoki flows into the lake. The route enters the Oulanka national park at the beginning of the trip.

Having paddled for some 2 kilometrs we hear the roar of the great falls of Taivalköngäs. We admire the falls from the riverbank as it is too dangerous to shoot the rapids in a canoe. We carry the canoes some 200 metres downstream through a path crossing an island right in the middle of the river. Should you wish to stay here longer to admire the falls, there is a wilderness hut that sleeps 10-15 people.

Taivalköngäs falls

Downstream from the Taivalköngäs falls both the river Oulankajoki and the canoeist calm down. The distinctive beauty of the river valley and tranquillity of the area offer unforgettable surroundings for enjoying the local nature. Here you have the opportunity to leave stress far behind. If you wish to enjoy the undisturbed beauty of the region for a little bit longer, the tour can be extended to carry on from rhe Kiutaköngäs falls all the way to Jäkälämutka. Note that there is no exception to having to pass the majestic Kiutaköngäs falls on foot overland, the thundering water surging down between rocky cliffs is not safe to be crossed waterborne. There is a half kilometre path leading you pass the falls safely.

Duration: 2 days
Length of journey: 32 km
Group size: 1-40 persons

Tour rating: Easy but the greater falls must be bypassed overland

Price: 70 € /person
Price include: Canoe and equipment (life jacket, paddle, map and water tight bag), transfers from Jäkälämutka to Savilampi, VAT
